1873, Absolution, Arizona. A stranger who has lost his memory arrives in this remote American province. The only hint of his past is the strange shackles on one of his wrists. The traveler quickly learns that the inhabitants of the town do not welcome strangers, and in general they go out on the streets only on the orders of Colonel Dolarheid, ruling in this area with an iron hand.
Soon the strange behavior of the inhabitants is explained. Periodically from the sky fall terrifying creatures that take everything they want and keep the city in panic fear. The protagonist, who gradually remembers what happened to him, becomes the town's only hope for salvation.
