Diese Adaption von Laurie Lees autobiografischem Roman verfolgt die Entwicklung eines jungen Mannes in der Kleinstadt Gloucestershire gegen Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs. Während der junge Laurie (Dashiell Reece) unter dem beschützenden Auge seiner Mutter (Juliet Stevenson) heranwächst, lernt er, mit einer exzentrischen Schar von Freunden, Nachbarn und Verwandten zu leben. Als Teenager entdeckt Laurie (jetzt gespielt von Joe Roberts) Frauen, insbesondere Rosie Burdock (Lia Barrow).
