Auf seiner Flucht vor den Russen strandet der 13-jährige Schlesier Thomas kurz nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Wien. Dort läuft er auf dem Schwarzmarkt dem Wehrmachtssoldaten "Krücke", der an der Front ein Bein verloren hat, über den Weg. Obwohl der Invalide von dem Jungen zunächst nichts wissen will, entspinnt sich zwischen den beiden allmählich eine Art Freundschaft. Als das Duo gerade bei der Jüdin Bronka Unterschlupf gefunden hat, erreicht es die Nachricht, dass die Deutschen "heim ins Reich" dürfen. Eine strapaziöse Reise beginnt.
While fleeing the Russians, 13-year-old Thomas from Silesia finds himself stranded in Vienna shortly after the end of World War II. There, on the black market, he encounters Wehrmacht soldier "Krücke," who had lost a leg at the front. Although the disabled soldier initially refuses to have anything to do with the boy, a friendship gradually develops between the two. Just as the duo has found shelter with Bronka, a Jewish woman, they receive news that the Germans are allowed to return "to the Reich." A grueling journey begins.
