Zwei Freunde, Billy Foster und Clyde Williams, müssen schnell Geld für ihre Bruderschaft, die Sons and Daughters of Shaka, auftreiben.[4] Als Schatzmeister der angeschlagenen Loge obliegt Billy die Finanzierung. Nachdem Billy Clyde davon überzeugt hat, dass dies die beste und schnellste Option ist, beschließen sie, ein erfolgreiches Profitmodell wieder aufleben zu lassen: Clydes besondere Fähigkeit zur Hypnose (die er nach eigenen Angaben während seiner Zeit als Sanitäter in der Armee erlernt hat) ermöglicht es den beiden, Boxkämpfe zu inszenieren und ihre Gewinne zu maximieren, indem sie alles auf den Außenseiter setzen. Billy und Clyde reisen mit ihren Frauen Beth und Dee Dee nach New Orleans, um einen Boxkampf zu manipulieren. Ihr Ziel ist Bootney Farnsworth, ein dürrer Außenseiter-Boxer, der in den ersten Sparringskämpfen unterlegen ist. Da es ihm schwerfällt, irgendjemanden zu beeindrucken, nicht einmal seinen Trainer, sinken seine Gewinnchancen von Tag zu Tag.
Nachdem sie Bootneys Kampf beobachtet haben, schleichen sich Billy und Clyde in dessen Hotelzimmer und hypnotisieren ihn, sodass er glaubt, er sei ein zäher, starker Kämpfer, der nicht zu besiegen sei. Mit dem Rest des Hotelbudgets wetten sie auf zwei berüchtigte Gangster, die sich eine hitzige Rivalität liefern: den etablierten Kansas City Mack und den Newcomer Biggie Smalls. Der hypnotisierte Bootney verwandelt sich in ein Boxphänomen und besiegt den Champion 40th Street Black mühelos durch KO. Nach dem Kampf gelingt es Clyde, Bootney nahe genug zu kommen, um ihn zu dehypnotisieren, bevor er, Billy und ihre Frauen nach Atlanta zurückkehren.
Two friends, Billy Foster and Clyde Williams, need to quickly find a way to raise funds for their fraternal lodge, the Sons and Daughters of Shaka.[4] It is incumbent on Billy to find the money because he is the treasurer of the struggling lodge. After Billy convinces Clyde that it is their best and quickest option, they decide to bring back a successful money-making scheme: Clyde's special ability of hypnosis (which he states that he learned during his time as a medic in the Army) allows the two to set up boxing matches and then maximize profits by going all in on the underdog. Billy and Clyde take their talents to New Orleans along with their wives, Beth and Dee Dee, to rig a boxing match; the competitor they are interested in is Bootney Farnsworth, a scrawny underdog boxer who is overwhelmed in the initial sparring matches. His difficulty to impress anyone, even his coach, makes the odds of him winning lower by the day.
After watching Bootney struggle, Billy and Clyde sneak into Bootney's hotel room and hypnotize him into thinking he is a tough, strong fighter who cannot be beaten. They use what's left of the lodge's budget to place their bets with two notorious gangsters involved in a heated rivalry: the established Kansas City Mack, and the newcomer Biggie Smalls. The hypnotized Bootney is transformed into a boxing phenomenon and easily defeats the champion, 40th Street Black, by KO. After the match, Clyde manages to get close enough to Bootney to de-hypnotize him, before he and Billy and their wives return to Atlanta.
