Der Archäologe Michael Maas muss berufsbedingt weit weg von zu Hause, in Italien, sein, obwohl seine Frau gerade in Deutschland gestorben ist und zwei Kinder, Oliver und Julia, hinterlassen hat. Aber wenn Julia Studentin ist und tatsächlich bereits ein unabhängiges Leben führt, dann ist der fünfzehnjährige Oliver, für den der Tod seiner Mutter eine echte Tragödie war, in der Obhut seiner Großmutter. Vor seinem Tod versprach Oliver seiner Mutter, dass er weiterhin Geige lernen und spielen würde. Doch es kommt zu einem Unfall und die einzige Geige der Familie geht kaputt. Und dann taucht ein Fremder auf, der sich mit dem geheimnisvollen Namen „Graf Esteban“ vorstellt und Oliver die Geige anbietet, auf der Paganini einst spielte und auf der man in die Zukunft blicken kann.
