Die Handlung spielt in einem Vorort von Zagreb, dessen Bewohner nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg viele Jahre lang versuchen, ihre Bräuche und Lebensweise zu bewahren und in Witzen und Liedern Erlösung von einem freudlosen Dasein zu finden. Die Hauptfiguren dieser Geschichte sind vor allem Kinder. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Familie Skrinjar, die in einem einstöckigen Haus in Trešnjevka in Armut vegetiert.
