In der Inneren Mongolei, eingebettet vor der Kulisse des Dschingis-Khan-Mausoleums, liegt Yushuwan, ein kleines Dorf, das sowohl von Han- als auch von Mongolen bewohnt wird. In den 1970er Jahren, in einer Zeit des Mangels, genossen Daxiang und seine Freunde eine glückliche Kindheit. Daxiang hatte drei enge Freunde: Jingui, Lide und Tara. Diese vier Jungen stahlen Milch von der Kuh des Teams, schikanierten die leistungsstärksten Mädchen und zündeten versehentlich die Scheune des Teams mit selbstgebastelten Knallkörpern an. Selbst die schwierigsten Zeiten blieben von Kindern ihres Alters unbemerkt. Diese fragmentarischen Erinnerungen, Stück für Stück zusammengefügt, erzeugen ein einzigartiges Zeitgefühl.
In diesem Jahr ereignete sich in Yushuwan ein bedeutendes Ereignis: Eine Eisenbahnlinie wurde durch Yushuwan gebaut, die eine direkte Verbindung nach Peking bot. Jedes Produktionsteam der Gemeinde konkurrierte um Arbeiter für die Eisenbahnlinie, da das Bauteam fünfmal so viele Arbeitspunkte bot. In „Mit dem Zug nach Peking“ verwebt der Eisenbahnbau die Konflikte des Dorfes, die Konflikte innerhalb der Familie und die Kindheit der Kinder. Er dient als roter Faden und spiegelt zugleich die Zukunftssehnsucht und die Träume der Kinder vom Wachstum wider. Peking ist ein attraktiver Ort für Kinder und Lehrer.
