Mattes (Hannes Jaenicke), Hannah (Rebecca Immanuel), Tommy (Max Boekhoff) und Emily Wiebeck (Johanna Werner) sind eine typische Durchschnittsfamilie, tägliche Meinungsverschiedenheiten inklusive. Nachdem die Situation nach einem Streit einmal mehr eskaliert, schlagen Mattes und Hannah ihren Kindern ein waghalsiges Experiment vor: Für einen Monat übernehmen die Kinder das Kommando in der Familie. Sie verwalten die Haushaltskasse, es gelten keine Vorschriften oder Verbote ihrer Eltern und Mattes und Hannah handeln nur nach Anweisung der Kinder. Es wird vertraglich abgesichert, dass ein Abbruch des Rollentauschs nur möglich ist, wenn alle Familienmitglieder zustimmen. Als Schiedsrichter wird Mattes Vater Lukas (Walter Kreye) eingespannt. Das Chaos ist vorprogrammiert, als die 14-jährige Emily den Tausch mit einer Megaparty beginnt und der zehnjährige Tommy das komplette Haushaltsgeld für eine Spielkonsole ausgibt. Mit der Zeit nimmt das Experiment immer unkontrollierbare Dimensionen an, bis sogar das Jugendamt vor der Tür steht.
