Die Geschichte wird aus der Sicht eines Mädchens erzählt, das sich an seine Kindheit, an Freunde, seinen jüngeren Bruder, seinen Vater und seine Mutter erinnert. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Vietnam Ende der 60er Jahre lebt der Vater lange Zeit nicht zu Hause. Die Zeiten sind hart, es gibt keine Arbeit und er ist nicht ganz richtig im Kopf. Dort, im Krieg, konnte er einen Freund nicht retten und ließ ihn unter den Kugeln des Vietcong sterben. Dieser Schuldkomplex quält ihn weiterhin, obwohl schon viel Zeit vergangen ist. Der Sohn lebt ein für einen Jungen normales Leben – er hängt mit den Nachbarsjungen herum, baut so etwas wie eine Hütte auf einem großen Baum, kämpft mit Feinden. Der Vater konnte schließlich eine Anstellung als Retter in halb überfluteten Minen finden. Der Moment kommt, in dem er für seine alte Schuld büßen muss.
The story is told from the point of view of a girl who remembers her childhood, friends, younger brother, father and mother. After returning from Vietnam in the late 60s, the father does not live at home for long periods of time. Times are hard, there is no work, and he is not quite right in the head. There, in the war, he was unable to save a friend and left him to die under the bullets of the Viet Cong. This guilt complex continues to torment him, despite the fact that much time has passed. The son lives a normal life for a boy - he hangs out with the neighboring boys, builds something like a hut on a large tree, fights with enemies. The father was eventually able to find a job as a rescuer in half-flooded mines. The moment comes when he must atone for his old guilt.
