Der Film basiert auf der Novelle „Das Leben des Lazarillo von Tormes: Seine Missgeschicke und Missgeschicke“, die 1554 von einem anonymen spanischen Schriftsteller verfasst wurde. Es handelt sich um eine literarische Adaption populärer Volkssagen über die Irrfahrten des jungen Führers Lazaro. Der Name Lazaro oder Lazarillo wurde sogar zum Synonym für die jungen Begleiter blinder Bettler.
The film is based on the novella "The Life of Lazarillo of Tormes: His Misfortunes and Misadventures," written in 1554 by an anonymous Spanish writer. It is a literary adaptation of popular folklore tales about the wanderings of the boy guide Lazaro. The name Lazaro, or Lazarillo, even became a byword for the young companions of blind beggars.
