Sam Docherty is a good kid. He doesn't mean to get in trouble, it just happens. But when Sam has a run-in with a bully, the Docherty family - 12-year-old Sam, his older sister, Courtney, and their parents Gary and Marilyn - decide to leave their problems and the big city behind and move to a small town where they can "really live." The Docherty family is then faced with a new set of problems as they find themselves ostrasized by their new neighbors and trouble finds Sam, once again. The only friend he has is Chaser, a stray dog he has taken in. Just when it look like things are never going to change, fate turns the situation around.
Sam Docherty ist ein guter Junge. Er gerät nicht absichtlich in Schwierigkeiten, es passiert einfach. Doch als Sam mit einem Rowdy aneinandergerät, beschließt die Familie Docherty – der zwölfjährige Sam, seine ältere Schwester Courtney und ihre Eltern Gary und Marilyn –, ihre Probleme und die Großstadt hinter sich zu lassen und in eine Kleinstadt zu ziehen, wo sie „richtig leben“ können. Dort sieht sich die Familie Docherty mit neuen Problemen konfrontiert, da sie von ihren neuen Nachbarn gemieden wird und Sam erneut in Schwierigkeiten gerät. Sein einziger Freund ist Chaser, ein streunender Hund, den er aufgenommen hat. Gerade als es so aussieht, als würde sich nie etwas ändern, wendet das Schicksal das Blatt.
