Es ist Frühling 1945, und die Front rückt auf ein kleines mährisches Dorf vor. Ein unverblümter, ungeschönter Blick auf die letzten Kriegstage aus der Perspektive eines zwölfjährigen Jungen.
Švankmajers Worte treffen hier ins Schwarze: „Die Verklärung der Kindheit als verlorenes Paradies ist im Grunde verwerflich. Nicht einmal unsere Geburt kann angenehm sein. Die Kindheit ist voller Verbote, Ungerechtigkeit und Grausamkeit. Deshalb können es Kinder selbst kaum erwarten, erwachsen zu werden (was ebenfalls ein Fehler ist, wie die Idealisierung der Kindheit im Alter). Niemand kann so grausam sein wie ein Kind.“ Doch der Film handelt nicht einmal von Kindern im Krieg; er bietet eine zutiefst ironische Perspektive von jemandem, der all dies miterlebt und anschließend die Faszination und Desillusionierung der kommunistischen Tschechoslowakei erfahren hat.
It's spring 1945, and the front is approaching a small Moravian village. A frank, myth-free look at the last days of the war through the eyes of a twelve-year-old boy.
Švankmajer's words are fitting here: "The fascination with childhood, as some kind of lost paradise, is fundamentally criminal. There can be nothing pleasant even in our very birth. Childhood is filled with prohibitions, injustice, and cruelty. That's why children themselves can't wait to grow up (which is also a mistake, like idealizing childhood in old age). No one can be as cruel as a child." But the film isn't even about children during the war; it's a deeply ironic perspective from someone who lived through it all and then experienced both the fascination and disillusionment of communist Czechoslovakia.
