In den frühen 60er Jahren lebte ein schweigsamer Schuhmacher, Herr Lo, mit seiner Familie in einer Sackgasse in einem Arbeiterviertel. Am anderen Ende der Straße arbeitete sein Bruder als Friseur. Der Schuhmacher gab fast sein gesamtes Geld für die Ausbildung seiner Söhne aus. Der älteste Sohn, Desmond, war ein ausgezeichneter Schüler und Schulmeister im Hindernislauf, der jüngste war ein achtjähriger Bandit mit dem Spitznamen Big-Eared – ein Dieb, ein Betrüger, ein Rowdy und die Seele des Viertels. Das schwierige, aber glückliche Leben von Herrn Los Familie wird von den üblichen Hongkong-Problemen dieser Zeit überschattet: zynische Korruption, zerstörerische Taifune und das Gespenst des Kommunismus, vor dem die potenziellen Kunden des Schuhmachers aus der Stadt flohen. In the early 60s, a silent shoemaker, Mr. Lo, lived with his family in a dead-end street in a working-class neighborhood. At the other end of the street, his brother worked as a hairdresser. So they followed the advice of their wise mother: if one earns money on heads and the other on feet, they will never go broke. The shoemaker spent almost all the money he earned on his sons' education. The eldest son, Desmond, was an excellent student and a school champion in steeplechase, the youngest was an eight-year-old bandit nicknamed Big-Eared - a thief, a cheat, a hooligan and the soul of the neighborhood. The difficult but happy life of Mr. Lo's family is overshadowed by the usual Hong Kong troubles of that time: cynical corruption, destructive typhoons and the specter of communism, from which the shoemaker's potential clients fled the city. The story is based on Alex Lo's own childhood, and the director looks at the characters, their troubles and happy moments from the bottom up, through the eyes of Big-Eared - the main narrator.
