Martha Krapp is very surprised when her husband Josef suddenly appears at the door. He has been travelling around the world for years and had rarely been home, hence his nickname "Don Chaussee" (man of the road. In his absence, Martha has lead the children's home "Sonnenhof" with loving determination. Now she starts worrying about her easygoing husband's "bad influence" because there are already enough problems in the village with "her" children. And in fact, Josef causes some chaos with them. However, in the end, when 13 donkeys break out of a railroad car, his big time has come.
