The movie is based on the autobiographical novel by English novelist and poet Laurie Lee. The action takes place in the village of Slad in Gloucestershire, which is associated with the most vivid childhood experiences of the young hero. The tall grass into which he was lowered when he was first brought to the village, an adored odd mother who raises numerous children alone, a village school with its slightly wild teaching system and, of course, the first taste of village cider and the first kiss.
