I have seen many Coming-of-Age films. Yet, never have I seen one with such a touching and beautiful story as the 1996 Portuguese drama Adeus, Pai (Farewell, Father). At thirteen years old, Filipe (Jose Afonso Pimentel) feels his father’s absence, who is always busy and never has time to spend with his son.
One night, Felipe’s dreams suddenly come true when his father enters the room and announces that they’re going on vacation– just the two of them.
Puzzled but happy, Felipe accepts, and before long, they land on one of the beautiful Azores islands. Soon, it becomes clear that Filipe’s father desires to make up for all those years he deprived his son of his presence. When Felipe gathers the courage to inquire about the surprising vacation, his father confesses that he”…suddenly realized that he had a 13-year-old son that he doesn’t know, that doesn’t know him, and who may need a father “. He also admits that he is ill and doesn’t have much time left to live.
Ich habe schon viele Coming-of-Age-Filme gesehen. Doch keiner hat mich mit einer so berührenden und schönen Geschichte wie das portugiesische Drama „Adeus, Pai“ (Leb wohl, Vater) aus dem Jahr 1996 berührt. Der dreizehnjährige Filipe (José Afonso Pimentel) vermisst seinen Vater, der immer beschäftigt ist und nie Zeit für ihn hat.
Eines Nachts werden Filipes Träume plötzlich wahr, als sein Vater das Zimmer betritt und verkündet, dass sie in den Urlaub fahren – nur die beiden.
Verwirrt, aber glücklich, willigt Filipe ein, und schon bald landen sie auf einer der wunderschönen Azoreninseln. Schnell wird klar, dass Filipes Vater all die Jahre nachholen möchte, in denen er seinem Sohn seine Anwesenheit vorenthalten hat. Als Felipe den Mut fasst, nach dem überraschenden Urlaub zu fragen, gesteht sein Vater, dass ihm „plötzlich bewusst wurde, dass er einen 13-jährigen Sohn hat, den er nicht kennt, der ihn nicht kennt und der vielleicht einen Vater braucht“. Er gibt außerdem zu, krank zu sein und nicht mehr viel Zeit zu leben zu haben.
