Manu, aka Courgette, a 9-year-old boy, lives alone with his alcoholic mother. Left to his own devices, he enjoys looking at the sky and inventing games. Everything is turned upside down the day he finds an old revolver in the kitchen. Mistaking it for a toy, he shoots at the clouds to make life more beautiful, but accidentally kills his mother. In total denial, he finds himself placed in a home. There, he must find the courage to face up to the terrible truth of what he has done. But Courgette also discovers friendship thanks to his friends at the home, Rosy, the housekeeper, and little Camille, with whom he falls in love. But it's Raymond, the gendarme who brought him to the home, who Courgette turns his attention to. He has a crazy plan: to be adopted by him. But Raymond has other worries: he's been in constant conflict with his son Victor since his wife's death...
